Learn to ride “single-track”.
If you are planning a visit to Afan. One of our trails called the Wall was voted as being amongst the Worlds top-ten trails to ride before you die by What Mountain Bike Magazine back in 2004.
The trail starts at the Afan Argoed Visitor Centre, only six miles from junction 40 of the M4. The Penhydd Trail also starts in the same place and was the first trail built in the valley. If you are relatively new to MTB riding this trail is the one to start on. Then ride the Wall later in the day. This will probably take about three and a bit hours to ride. Next learn to stop grinning. It’s a Mountain Bike Riders Paradise in the Afan Forest Park.
It’s not all single-track
It’s not all single-track, we have a Family Route that follows the track bed of the old Railway systems used for extracting minerals from the valley. These trails are surfaced and form a circular route of about fifteen miles that is super for family riding. Ride gently up the valley to Cymmer and take some refreshment in the old Railway Station aptly named The Refresh. It is almost impossible for Bike rental companies to acquire Insurance for children under twelve to ride their rental bikes. So bring their own bikes along with you to save being disappointed.
Afan Forest Park.
I expect you found out about the single-track trails in the Afan valley from stories on the inter-net or from the recent flush of articles appearing in the mountain bike magazines.
Afan has become a testing ground for many of the top mountain bike manufacturers. Staff writers from most of the paper and inter-net magazines ride here regularly.
